Memory, Purity & More

In the Clear Prairie Light

In the Clear Prairie Light is a photo sequencing project investigating the Solomon D. Butcher archive, which consists of over 3,000 photos of families in front of their sod houses and farms in Custer County, Nebraska taken by Butcher between 1886 and 1912—most of which moved out West because their patriarch was lured by the Homestead Act of 1862. The project explores and combines the archival Americana imagery, the biblical idea of productivity, and text from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie.
